Gleyber Torres Leaves Game with Injury

CLEVELAND – Detroit Tigers All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres had to leave Saturday’s game against Cleveland in the middle of the first inning due to an injury suffered while sliding into second base. According to reports from the Tigers, Torres suffered a neck contusion after being hit by an elbow during the play. Torres got on base after receiving a walk with one out. On a ground ball by Riley Greene, Cleveland’s second baseman, Johnathan Rodriguez, took the ball out of his glove and passed it to Brayan Rocchio. However, the shortstop moved off the base while Torres was sliding, remaining a short distance from second base, and was hit by Rocchio’s glove and elbow as he fell. Torres remained on the ground and was examined by the trainers for a couple of minutes before leaving the game. Javier Báez moved from shortstop to second base, while Mark Sweeney came in to play shortstop. Torres is batting .279 and has an 18-game on-base streak. He was one of three Detroit players voted as American League starters for the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta, along with outfielders Riley Greene and Báez.
