Yankees Update: Wells Ready to Play, Grisham Recovering
Catcher Austin Wells was out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game on Wednesday, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Wells has recovered from a test for a circulation issue in his left index finger. “Wellsy is ready,” Boone said. “He’ll be in the game tomorrow and available tonight.” Ben Rice was the catcher against Toronto on Wednesday night, after having made his second and third starts behind the plate this season against the Athletics last weekend. Outfielder Trent Grisham remains sidelined due to a left hamstring strain, but Boone indicated that his condition continues to improve. Grisham exited Monday’s game after a cleat got caught in the grass.Boone mentioned that Grisham could be available off the bench on Wednesday if he felt good after participating in pre-game activity.“Yesterday was a good day and so far it feels like today is even better,” Boone said. “If he has another good day today, he could be in the lineup tomorrow.”

Right-hander Luis Gil missed a scheduled throwing session on Tuesday because his wife was giving birth, according to Boone. The 2024 American League Rookie of the Year will pitch on Thursday.
Gil hasn’t pitched for the Yankees this season due to a high-grade strain of the latissimus dorsi in his throwing shoulder. Right-hander Clayton Beeter was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday and right-hander Geoff Hartlieb was designated for assignment. Beeter was 0-0 with a 1.02 ERA in 16 games in Triple-A, where he struck out 29 batters in 17 2/3 innings. Beeter had two saves in three opportunities.Hartlieb made his only appearance with the Yankees in Tuesday’s 12-5 loss, allowing three runs in one inning.“He’s been on our radar for a couple of years, kind of pushing the envelope to be part of the mix,” Boone said. “He’s got a lot of talent. Hopefully he can come here and carve out a role in the bullpen.”
