Rockies Call Up Yanquiel Fernández from Triple-A

The Colorado Rockies have called up outfielder Yanquiel Fernández, considered the number 5 prospect in the organization, from Triple-A Albuquerque. The announcement was made this Tuesday, marking a significant move in the team’s roster. Fernández, 22, has had an outstanding season in Albuquerque, where he is batting .284 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs in 64 games. The Rockies signed him in 2019 as an international free agent from Cuba for $295,000, when he was 16 years old. The left-handed batter was not included in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Houston Astros’ left-handed pitcher, Colton Gordon. Fernández has yet to debut in the Major Leagues. This promotion is part of several moves in the Rockies’ roster, who currently have the worst record in the league.
  • The Rockies also selected catcher Austin Nola’s contract from Albuquerque.
  • In addition, they sent catcher Braxton Fulford to Triple-A.
  • They reinstated right-handed pitcher Tanner Gordon from the 15-day injured list and sent him to Albuquerque.
  • They designated outfielder Sam Hilliard for assignment.
Nola, 35, made his debut in the Major Leagues in 2019 with Seattle and last played in the majors in 2023 with San Diego. Starting catcher Hunter Goodman returned to the lineup on Tuesday night against the Astros, after missing four games with a hamstring injury. Fulford replaced him during that period and is batting .250 in 14 games this season. Gordon is 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA in three starts in the Major Leagues this season. Hilliard hit .196 in 20 games with Colorado.
