Tom Aspinall Wishes Jon Jones the Best After His Retirement

English fighter Tom Aspinall has expressed his good wishes to Jon Jones after his retirement from the world of mixed martial arts. Aspinall, who is now the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, regrets not having had the opportunity to face Jones for the title. Aspinall, with a record of 15-3, became the undisputed champion last Saturday, after UFC CEO Dana White announced Jones’ retirement. Aspinall had been waiting for a unification fight against Jones since he won the interim title in November 2023. He even defended his interim title in July 2024. Jones, 37, finally decided to retire instead of accepting a fight with Aspinall.

“From a selfish perspective,” Aspinall admitted that he would have liked Jones to continue competing, but he doesn’t hold a grudge for his retirement. He has always considered himself the champion and is happy that the situation with Jones is “a thing of the past and we can move on.”

Aspinall also added: “I never chased Jon, I was chasing the heavyweight title. Jones would have been a great name on my record, but the opponent never mattered. What was important was to be the best in the world.” Aspinall also wished Jones the best in his personal life: “I don’t know him personally. I know he’s going through difficulties at the moment. I wish him the best of luck. If he feels he has done enough and can be happy with that, then God bless him.” Earlier this month, Jones, considered one of the best fighters of all time, was accused of leaving the scene of an accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in February. He is scheduled to appear in court next month. With Jones’ official retirement, Aspinall, 32, is expected to defend his heavyweight title in the near future. Aspinall hopes to fight twice this year.

“A fight is coming,” Aspinall said about his next fight. “It will be soon. I want to fight twice this year. I absolutely see that happening.”
