Patrick Kane Signs Extension with the Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have secured the continuity of veteran forward Patrick Kane with a one-year contract extension worth $3 million, the team announced Monday night. This agreement allows Kane to avoid unrestricted free agency and secures his stay on a team seeking a strong postseason push. At 36 years old, and with limited long-term opportunities, Kane signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings last summer, with a $4 million cap hit, and made the most of the situation. Although Detroit failed to qualify for the postseason in the Eastern Conference, Kane managed 21 goals and 59 points. It was his highest goal total since the 2021-22 season in Chicago, when he scored 26. His age isn’t diminishing his playing time either. With the Red Wings last season, he played in 72 games, averaging 17:58 minutes on the ice. This season will be interesting for Kane, as the overall number 1 pick in 2007 will turn 37 just before Thanksgiving, and depending on his start, he could be considered to be part of the US Olympic team in 2026. As the season begins in the Motor City, Kane will rank third on the all-time list of goals scored by U.S.-born players, 31 goals behind Mike Modano in second place.Over the weekend, the Red Wings acquired veteran goaltender John Gibson, a key player in goal with two years remaining on his contract. Earlier, on Monday, in a move to free up space on the salary cap for free agency, Detroit sent veteran winger and two-time Stanley Cup champion Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations.
