The Anaheim Ducks Trade John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings

The Anaheim Ducks have finalized the trade of goaltender John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings this Saturday, ending months of speculation about his future with the team. In the agreement, Detroit ceded goaltender Petr Mrazek, a fourth-round pick in 2026, and a second-round pick in 2027 to the Ducks. In return, the Ducks gave up Gibson, who played the first 12 seasons of his NHL career with Anaheim. Gibson has two years remaining on his eight-year contract that he signed in 2018, with a salary cap hit of $6.4 million.

“We want to thank John for his time with our organization and for being an integral part of the Ducks for over a decade,” said Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. “It became clear that John wanted a new opportunity, and after many conversations with him, we felt that now was the right time to make this move. John and his family became an important part of the community and his dedication to Orange County will leave a lasting impact. We wish John and his family all the best in their next chapter.”

Gibson, 31, was considered by many to be the best goaltender potentially available this offseason. His name had been in trade rumors for several seasons due to his manageable cap hit and the Ducks’ lack of success in the standings. The emergence of 25-year-old goaltender Lukas Dostal for Anaheim over the past two seasons made a Gibson trade more feasible. Furthermore, the fact that Gibson only had a 10-team no-trade clause opened up the market for the Pittsburgh native. After a standout rookie season in 2015-16, in which he finished seventh in voting for the Calder and Vezina trophies, Gibson’s numbers remained solid even as the Ducks moved away from playoff contention. His numbers dipped between 2022 and 2024, before rebounding last year, when Gibson had a .911 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average in 29 games, despite dealing with a series of injuries. In his career, Gibson has a record of 204-217-63 in 506 games, with a save percentage of .910 and a goals-against average of 2.89. Mrazek, 33, is under contract through next season with a cap hit of $4.25 million. Anaheim will be his sixth team in 14 NHL seasons. Mrazek had a 12-21-2 record in 38 games between Chicago and Detroit, with a .891 save percentage and a 3.35 goals-against average. Both Mrazek and Dostal are Czech.
