A’ja Wilson Reaches 5,000 Points: A Historic Milestone in the WNBA
WNBA star A’ja Wilson has achieved an impressive milestone in her career. In Wednesday’s game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Connecticut Sun, Wilson surpassed the 5,000-point mark, setting a new league speed record.
Wilson, who has been named WNBA MVP three times, achieved this feat in her 238th game. This achievement places her above other great players such as Breanna Stewart (242 games), Diana Taurasi (243 games), and Angel McCoughtry (257 games).
With this milestone, Wilson becomes the 28th player in WNBA history to surpass 5,000 points. Diana Taurasi, who retired this year after two decades in the league, leads the all-time scoring chart with 10,646 points.
Wilson started the game needing only seven points to reach the mark. He managed to score his 7th and 8th points with a play at 4:04 of the end of the second quarter. The fans at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas celebrated the moment with enthusiasm, displaying signs with the number “5,000”.
Despite the excitement, Wilson remained calm and received congratulations from her teammates and the Sun players.
A’ja Wilson, 28 years old, has been fundamental in the WNBA championships that the Aces won in 2022 and 2023. Selected as the number 1 draft pick in 2018, coming from South Carolina, Wilson has been recognized as MVP in 2020, 2022, and 2024.
