Santo Domingo. President Luis Abinader announced the creation of a special commission through a decree, with the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of building a “modern” baseball stadium on state-owned land located in Ensanche La Fe, in the National District. This project seeks to comply with the international standards of Major League Baseball (MLB), with the goal of turning the Dominican capital into a potential venue for high-level sporting events. In addition to the construction of the stadium, the commission will analyze other projects that promote the integral development of the area. The objective is to strategically take advantage of these public lands for the benefit of sports, recreation, and urban revitalization, according to a statement from the Presidential Press Office.
The commission will be led by Jorge Subero Isa, former president of the Supreme Court of Justice, and will include the participation of the Minister of Sports; the general manager of the state-owned Banco de Desarrollo y Exportaciones (Bandex); the executive director of the National Baseball Commissioner; and professionals Angélica Noboa Pagán, Elka Shecker Mendoza, Olivo Rodríguez Huertas and Edgar Torres Reynoso, who will act as executive director. The inclusion of legal experts in the commission ensures a thorough evaluation of the legal aspects of the development. The commission will report directly to the President of the Republic and will be administratively attached to the Ministry of Finance. Its work will be temporary and will end once the objective of the decree is met. With this initiative, the Dominican government reiterates its commitment to the sports, urban, and economic development of the capital, focusing on high-impact projects that combine public and private investment to improve citizen life. In the designated areas is the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, built in 1955, as well as a private children’s baseball league. The main headquarters of the General Directorate of Traffic and Ground Transportation Safety (Digesett) and a large parking area are also located there. For approximately two decades, sectors linked to baseball have requested and presented proposals for the demolition of the Quisqueya Juan Marichal and the construction of a new stadium, similar to the one described in the statement. Other sectors have expressed their opposition to the project, arguing that the State could incur excessive investment. The Dominican Republic needs a sports infrastructure that matches its baseball tradition and its growing international prominence. This project aims to position the country as a destination capable of hosting (games of) Major League teams and boosting the urban economy.
