Thailand Gears Up to Accelerate: Bangkok Could Host Formula 1 in 2028
The Thai cabinet has given the green light to the proposal to organize a Formula 1 street race in Bangkok, with the possibility of it being held from 2028, according to official sources on Tuesday.
Jirayu Houngsub, government spokesperson, announced in a press conference that the initial proposal contemplates the holding of five events between 2028 and 2032.
“In the next two or three years, Thailand will host a world-class competition, something we never thought would happen in Thailand,” Jirayu stated.

Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism, added that the estimated investment for this project amounts to approximately $1.23 billion. The Bangkok race would take place on a circuit near Chatuchak Park.
The proposed circuit would be a 3.54-mile urban track, located between Krung Thep Aphiwat central station and Chatuchak Park, north of the city center.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra attended the Monaco Grand Prix last month, in one of several meetings with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, to discuss the proposal.
F1 announced a full 24-race calendar for 2026 last week, with the addition of the Madrid Grand Prix, which replaces the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
Several existing race contracts are set to expire before Thailand’s possible entry in 2028, with the Dutch Grand Prix scheduled to leave the calendar after its 2026 event, and Barcelona unlikely to keep its place now that Madrid has been added.
The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will become a biennial event from 2027, meaning it will not be held in 2028 and 2030, before its contract expires in 2031.
On Tuesday, F1 announced that the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal had extended its contract until 2035, while Miami has the longest agreement with the sport, until 2041.
