British & Irish Lions Squad Analysis: A Challenge for the Wallabies?

Andy Farrell has revealed the British & Irish Lions squad, with a selection that, for the most part, follows expectations, although the absence of Owen Farrell stands out. This team, while respectable, does not evoke the same fear as the squads of 2001 and 2013. The non-inclusion of Owen Farrell in the initial list of 38 players could be met with relief by Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt and his team. Farrell’s presence on the field was always a headache for Australia, securing key victories for England. The Lions’ first line lacks the impact of yesteryear. While the Wallabies have improved significantly in this area, the Lions will depend on Furlong and Ellis Genge, with Fagerson and Schoeman as substitutes. In the second line, Maro Itoje stands out as a leader, but the team does not have figures of the caliber of Martin Johnson or Alun-Wyn Jones. The Lions’ third line is hardworking, but this is where Australia could impose their game. The Australian trio of Valetini, McReight and Wilson proved their worth in the past, and McReight’s absence in a recent match highlighted the team’s dependence.

The combination of fly-half and scrum-half that Farrell chooses for the first match generates great interest, both for Schmidt and the Wallabies. The main doubt lies in the absence of a clear option at fly-half, as Sam Prendergast is not yet ready for the tour. The possible combination of Gibson-Park and Finn Russell in the same team raises questions. The lack of a renowned fly-half, like Wilkinson in 2001 or Sexton in 2013, is a problem for the Lions. In the midfield, the Lions could have an advantage. Although the Wallabies’ Len Ikitau is world-class, and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has an undeniable X-factor, their combination in the midfield is recent, and Suaalii has primarily played at fullback. The Lions’ three-quarter line presents interesting options, but Australia also has high-level attackers who could match the challenge.

If Tom Wright plays as he did in Europe last year, the Wallabies could be the ones to open up the game through the wings and on the counterattack. Local bookmakers see the Lions as favorites, but the odds for Australia could be attractive to bettors. Wallabies players should use this as motivation, especially after the selection of a Lions team that doesn’t match the level of 2001 or 2013. This Wallabies team is at an intermediate point, but should be confident of taking home the Tom Richards Cup and giving Australian rugby a boost. Meanwhile, they hope Owen Farrell enjoys his summer vacation.
