Jordan Spieth Withdraws from Travelers Championship Due to Shoulder Pain

Golfer Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw from the Travelers Championship after playing 13 holes on Thursday due to a shoulder blade discomfort that prevented him from swinging without feeling pain. Spieth explained that the injury came on suddenly, possibly from sleeping in a bad position. He noticed the problem during practice, received treatment from his physical therapist before starting the game, but the situation did not improve. At the time of his retirement, Spieth had accumulated 5 strokes over par, without having achieved any birdies. He informed his playing partner, Luke Clanton, that he could not continue and was taken away in a cart. This is the first time Spieth has withdrawn from a PGA Tour event in his 297 professional starts.

I had never withdrawn from an event at any level, so I really didn’t know what to do. It just became too much”, Spieth commented. “I didn’t see the situation improving until probably Saturday. These things usually last a day longer, and no matter what I did, it was going to be… I don’t know, it’s unfortunate.

Spieth added: “I’ve been doing everything well, and I think it was something very random.”

This setback comes at an inopportune moment for Spieth, who had managed to qualify for his first major event of the year without needing a sponsor exemption. Furthermore, his wife is about to give birth to their third child in the coming weeks, and he was not planning to participate in any other tournament before the Open Championship. Despite having started the season later due to surgery on his left wrist last August, Spieth has managed to climb back into the top 50 of the world ranking and the top 40 of the FedEx Cup. Spieth reported that he felt tension on both sides of his neck and upper back while warming up on the practice range. He stopped the session to receive treatment, but the situation did not improve when the round began. His initial goal was to complete the round because there was no cut after 36 holes.

“It’s a strange situation with a high-level event with no cut and important points,” he explained. “It’s like, ‘What’s the downside if I can finish, even if it’s ugly?’ And then I hit my tee shot on the 13th hole, and it really hurt.”

Spieth had tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open and was close to contention at the Memorial, where he ultimately tied for seventh.
