Grizzlies’ Zach Edey Faces Speeding Charges

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey is facing a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving. Police stopped Edey for driving 101 mph in a 55 mph zone in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, on May 1st.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an Indiana State Police officer observed Edey’s vehicle, which was heading north, traveling at an excessive speed on State Road 25 in West Point, Indiana.

Upon being stopped, the former Purdue star explained that he was speeding to pass another vehicle.

The initial court hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Edey, selected in the ninth position of the 2024 NBA draft, led all rookies in field goal percentage (58%) and rebounds per game (8.3), in addition to ranking number 4 in blocks and second in plus-minus (plus 164). He was named to the NBA All-Rookie team and recorded 12 double-doubles in the season, the most for a Memphis rookie since Marc Gasol in 2008-09.

Edey, 23 years old, will likely miss the start of the 2025-26 season. The player injured his left ankle in an offseason workout earlier this month, an injury that required surgery to restabilize the ankle. Edey missed 12 games during his rookie season after twisting the same ankle in November.
