Nick Schmaltz Stays with the Utah Mammoth: Multi-Million Eight-Year Extension
Forward Nick Schmaltz has signed an eight-year contract extension with the Utah Mammoth, thus avoiding free agency this summer. The deal is worth $64 million. Schmaltz’s contract will have an impact of $8 million annually on the salary cap until the 2033-34 NHL season.Schmaltz, 30, is the team’s second-leading scorer with 59 points in 64 games. His excellent start to the season, with 16 points in 10 games, helped Utah head towards the playoffs in the franchise’s second season since moving to Salt Lake City and the first as the Mammoth.I never doubted that Utah is where I want to play for the rest of my career, and I am excited to sign an eight-year extension. We have a great core of players, and I know we can do special things together here in Utah. We have a very bright future, and I am grateful to Ryan and Ashley Smith for wanting me to be part of the group that will one day bring the Stanley Cup to Utah.
Nick Schmaltz
Last fall, the Mammoth signed Logan Cooley for $80 million over the next eight years. Schmaltz’s current contract, which paid him an average of just under $6 million per season, expired on June 30.Nick is a tremendous player and person, who is very deserving of this contract. We expect him to continue producing on the ice and leading our young and skilled forwards for many years.
Bill Armstrong, General Manager
The Mammoth hold the first wild card spot in the Western Conference, six points ahead of Seattle, who hold the second wild card spot, according to Tuesday’s games. The organization, formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes, hasn’t made the playoffs since 2020, when the tournament was expanded due to the pandemic, and the last time they qualified for the traditional 16-team tournament was in 2012.There’s a lot of momentum building around our team, and extending Nick Schmaltz is an important part of continuing that. Utah is becoming a real destination in the NHL, and Nick’s long-term commitment reflects the excitement around what we’re building here.
