AUSTIN, Texas – US national team and Orlando City SC fullback Alexander Freeman revealed his “secret love for soccer” during his childhood, despite not following in the athletic footsteps of his father, former NFL player Antonio Freeman.

Growing up, I was always asked if American football was the way, but when I was younger, I always had a secret love for soccer, and I feel like it was more than any other sport. I had to choose, and I think soccer was the clear choice by far.

The 20-year-old made these statements to the media before the Gold Cup match against Saudi Arabia. Thanks to a standout season in MLS, including two appearances on the league’s “Team of the Week,” the Super Bowl champion’s son has forged his own path with his USMNT debut this year and a place in the 2025 Gold Cup. Freeman started in the 5-0 victory against Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match of the tournament for the United States on Sunday, and is expected to start again against Saudi Arabia on June 19 at Q2 Stadium.

What is happening this year, I feel like it’s an honor. I feel like it’s a blessing. Obviously, the 2026 World Cup is something I’m always going to work for.

Regarding Luca de la Torre, who is also competing for a spot in the World Cup, the midfielder expressed gratitude for his time with San Diego FC of the MLS, which has helped him stay in consideration for the USMNT. I am very happy to be there and it has given me the opportunity to have rhythm and be called up to the national team and continue playing matches, which is really all any player can ask for. Currently on loan in the MLS from Celta de Vigo of LaLiga, the midfielder also said that it’s too early to discuss whether he thinks he should stay in San Diego or not ahead of next year’s World Cup.

I think that decision is a long way off at the moment. I’m focused on each day and the next opportunity to train or play a match. San Diego has been great for me. I love playing there. I played a lot. Now I have rhythm and fitness, so it’s been a great situation so far.
