Inky Son Leaves the Presidency of the WNBA Team in Portland

Portland, Ore. – Inky Son, who served as president of the new WNBA team in Portland, will leave the organization after less than three months in office. The announcement was made on Friday by RAJ Sports, led by the team owners, Alex Bhathal and Lisa Bhathal Merage.

“During his brief but impactful tenure, Son helped lay the groundwork for the franchise’s presence in Portland, shaping its early business operations and community engagement efforts,” the company said in a statement. “Son will return to New York, where he previously resided, and the organization thanks him for his leadership during this important phase and wishes him success in his next chapter.”

The team plans to start playing next season, along with the expansion team Toronto Tempo. The Portland team still has no name, coach, or general manager. The Portland brand is expected to be announced on July 15th. Son was announced as the first employee of the team in early April. As president of business operations, Son was tasked with leading all aspects of the business, including marketing, ticketing and sponsorships, community relations, finance, legal affairs, and human resources. She was also responsible for hiring. Before working for the team, Son was the administrative director of the NBA Basketball Players Association. Portland received an expansion team in September. The Bhathal family paid $125 million for the franchise.
