Kahleah Copper and DeWanna Bonner Re-sign with Phoenix Mercury
WNBA stars Kahleah Copper and DeWanna Bonner have renewed their contracts with the Phoenix Mercury, the team announced. Copper, a four-time All-Star, and Bonner, a two-time champion, will continue to bring their talent to the team. The Copper agreement is for two years, according to sources close to the matter. “Kahleah is a true leader, on and off the court, one of the most explosive athletes in our game and competes with relentless tenacity,” said Nick U’Ren, Mercury general manager. Copper averaged 15.6 points and 2.9 rebounds during the regular season, increasing her production in the playoffs to 17.8 points. This was her second season with the Mercury. Copper, 31, won a title in 2021 with the Chicago Sky, where she played for seven seasons. Bonner, 38, is the third-highest scorer in league history (7,807 points), eighth in rebounds (3,204), and third in games played (535). She is a six-time All-Star and was named Sixth Woman of the Year three times.Bonner, a veteran with 16 years of experience, started last season with the Indiana Fever before signing a one-year contract with the Mercury. Bonner played in nine games with the Fever and recorded career lows in points and rebounds. She then reunited with her fiancée, Alyssa Thomas, in Phoenix, where she played from 2009 to 2019 and won two championships. In 24 games last season with the Mercury, Bonner averaged 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists. The team also re-signed veteran guard Sami Whitcomb.“Having DeWanna back in the Mercury uniform is incredibly significant for our organization. She brings a championship mentality, elite skills, and the type of leadership that defines winning teams,” U’Ren stated.
