Kelsey Plum clarifies controversy after the WNBA All-Star

Los Angeles Sparks player Kelsey Plum has addressed the comments that generated controversy after the WNBA All-Star Game. In an interview on the “Bird’s Eye View” podcast, Plum explained that her statements were misinterpreted. During the match, the players wore warm-up shirts with the slogan “Pay Us What You Owe Us”, in support of the ongoing negotiations on the collective bargaining agreement. In the post-game press conference, Plum made a comment that was interpreted by some as a criticism towards Caitlin Clark and the players on her team. Plum pointed out that the players on Clark’s team were not present at the morning meeting where the message for the jerseys was decided. In the podcast, Plum clarified that his words were an attempt to lighten the mood. “I was trying to make a joke,” Plum said, explaining that the comment referred to his team having a nickname related to tiredness.

The questions came, and it was like, ‘CBA, this, this, this.’ It was like, ‘Hey, Team Clark, you didn’t make the meeting.’ I was joking that they were hungover, even though our team’s nickname was ‘hungover.’ So it was like, ‘At least we made it [to the meeting].’

Plum acknowledged that, in retrospect, his comments may have been misinterpreted due to the seriousness of the moment, given the context of the shirts and the support of the fans. The player also talked about the difficulty of responding to interpretations made on social media. “If you respond, you seem defensive. So you just have to let it go,” she concluded.
