Sophie Cunningham to Miss Rest of Season with Indiana Fever
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will be unable to play the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear in her right knee, the team announced on Tuesday.
The injury occurred during Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun.
Cunningham becomes the third Fever guard to suffer a season-ending injury in the last two weeks. Aari McDonald (foot fracture) and Sydney Colson (torn ACL) will also miss the rest of the year after being injured on the same day, August 7. Caitlin Clark (right groin) remains out indefinitely, as she has been for the last month.
The Fever also reported that they signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert. In her first season in Indiana, after being traded from Phoenix, Cunningham is averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds, with 13 starts. The team has indicated that she is expected to make a full recovery from the injury.
Indiana (19-16) is in sixth place in the standings and is looking to maintain its playoff position less than a month before the start of the postseason. The top eight teams in the league advance to the playoffs.
Before Sunday’s game, coach Stephanie White was asked if the team expected Clark to return before the end of the regular season, to which she replied: “That’s the hope. The hope is that she returns.”
