Wheelchair Tennis Returns to the US Open
Wheelchair tennis returns to the US Open after a break last year due to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Friday the participant lists for the upcoming US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, which will begin September 2-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. This tournament will also mark the twentieth anniversary of wheelchair tennis at the US Open.
These championships have grown enormously over the years, first with the addition of a quad division in 2007, followed by the US Open which became the first of the four major tournaments to have a junior wheelchair division in 2022, with singles and doubles for both boys and girls.
The United States has six players in the competition, while the Netherlands leads with nine.
Alfie Hewett, from Great Britain, will compete for his third consecutive US Open men’s title in a draw that includes Wimbledon champion Tokito Oda, the world number 1 who will seek his Golden Slam, which includes the four Grand Slams and the Paralympic Games.
Diede de Groot, from the Netherlands, can become the most winning female champion by winning her seventh consecutive singles title. She is currently tied with Esther Alf Vergeer, who retired in 2013.
