American tennis player Taylor Townsend has issued an apology “from the bottom of her heart” for disparaging comments related to Chinese gastronomy. The original comments, followed by their apology, were made before the match between the United States and Kazakhstan at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China. Townsend, 29 years old and number 1 in the world in doubles, shared videos of local dishes, including bullfrogs and turtles, joking about the need to “talk to Human Resources” about the quality of the food.

Following online criticism, Townsend spoke out again on Wednesday via Instagram to offer his apologies.

“I just wanted to come here and sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart,” expressed Townsend, who acknowledged her privilege as a professional athlete to be able to travel the world and experience cultural differences.
