Serena Williams Considers Return to Professional Tennis
The legendary tennis player Serena Williams has re-entered the testing pool of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), suggesting the possibility of a return to competition. Williams, 44, and winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, considered by many to be the best female tennis player in history, retired from tennis in 2022 after the US Open. Reports indicate that she requested her reinstatement, and her name appears on the most recent list of players in the testing pool, dated October 6. So far, there have been no public statements from Serena Williams about a possible return. However, on social media, she shared images of her on the court with her youngest daughter.According to the protocol, Williams officially declared her retirement to the ITIA in 2022, which meant she would no longer be subject to routine drug testing. Although her name still appears as retired on the website, she could return to competition and be considered a re-instated player after six months of active participation in the testing pool. The players in this group, which includes the majority of the top 100, must provide their location at any time and undergo random testing. Serena’s older sister, Venus, 45, returned to the WTA circuit in July after a 16-month absence. After a memorable exit in the first round of the US Open, Serena expressed her pride and admiration for her sister on social media.Venus recently accepted an invitation to play at the Auckland Open in January. Serena won the last WTA title of her career at that tournament in 2020.The only thing that would make this better is if she were here, as we always did everything together, of course I miss her.
