Sabalenka Struggles at Wimbledon: Comes Back and Advances to Semifinals

2 Min Read

In an emotional day at Wimbledon, Aryna Sabalenka managed to secure her place in the semifinals after a challenging match against Laura Siegemund. Sabalenka, current world number one, demonstrated her tenacity by coming back from a set down and recovering from breaks in the third set, prevailing with a final score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 on the center court.

A Path Full of Challenges

The Belarusian tennis player, seeking her first Wimbledon title, had to overcome the resistance of Siegemund, who, with her unpredictable game and variations in the depth and angles of her shots, complicated the match. Siegemund, ranked 104th and with an unconventional style, tested Sabalenka, especially in the decisive set. The German, who had eliminated Madison Keys, number 6, in the previous round, was looking to become the oldest Grand Slam semi-finalist of the Open era. Siegemund’s ability to change the depth, speed, angles, and effects of her shots frustrated Sabalenka, especially in the final set. Despite the challenges, Sabalenka remained calm and managed to impose her game in crucial moments, securing her place in the semifinals. In the semifinals, Sabalenka will face the winner of the match between Amanda Anisimova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This triumph marks a significant milestone for Sabalenka, who is seeking her first Wimbledon title and to continue her impressive performance in Grand Slam tournaments. Since 2022, Sabalenka has shown a remarkable ability to recover in major tournaments, with an 11-3 record after losing the first set. Before that date, her record was 2-13. Sabalenka improved to 12-1 in the Grand Slam tournaments quarterfinals, with her only loss at the French Open last year against Mirra Andreeva. That is the second-best record of any woman in the Open era after Chris Evert.
