Jessica Pegula Surprisingly Eliminated at Wimbledon

American tennis player and number 3 seed, Jessica Pegula, suffered an unexpected defeat in the first round of Wimbledon, marking her earliest elimination in a Grand Slam tournament since 2020. Pegula was defeated by the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, world number 116, with a score of 6-2 and 6-3. Pegula’s defeat is the biggest surprise in the tournament, both in the women’s and men’s categories so far. Pegula arrived at Wimbledon after obtaining her ninth individual title in Bad Homburg, Germany, where she defeated Iga Swiatek in the final, playing on grass. The match lasted less than an hour. Pegula, visibly affected, had tape on her left knee. Despite having defeated Cocciaretto in their only previous encounter at Wimbledon 2023, Pegula only managed five winners and committed 24 unforced errors. Furthermore, her performance with the second serve was low, winning only 42% of the points.

This is the first time the American has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam event since the 2020 French Open.

Cocciaretto will face the winner of the match between Tatiana Maria of Germany or the American Katie Volynets in the second round.
