Medvedev and Other Tennis Players Seek Exit from Dubai After Closure of Airspace
Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, former US Open champion, is among a small group of players and team members that the ATP Tour is assisting to leave Dubai. The situation arises due to travel restrictions imposed after the conflict in the region. Medvedev’s Instagram account shared on Monday a report from the Russian tennis publication Bolshe, which indicated that the tennis player is safe and staying at a friend’s apartment in Dubai. This comes after his victory at last week’s ATP event.Medvedev and other tennis players are scheduled to participate in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, whose main matches begin on Wednesday. The ATP has assured that they are in direct contact with those affected, as well as with the tournament organizers and security advisors. They are constantly evaluating travel conditions in line with airline operations and official guidelines. In addition to the tennis players, cricket players from the England and Pakistan development teams were also in the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, before a match that was canceled on Sunday. Youth basketball players also faced travel issues when a Euroleague tournament was canceled over the weekend. Numerous sporting events in the region have been suspended, including matches of the Asian Champions League and the Qatar league. The entity overseeing Formula 1 announced on Monday that it will focus on “safety and well-being” when considering the upcoming races in the region.“The health, safety, and well-being of our players, staff, and tournament team is our priority. We can confirm that a small number of players and team members remain in Dubai following the conclusion of the recent ATP 500 event.”
