Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner

Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the presence of its star, Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the way for Italy, winning their singles matches and securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title and the third consecutive one. The last nation to achieve a similar streak was the United States, which won five titles in a row between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, world number two and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate this week to focus on preparation for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked number 8, was also absent. Italy demonstrated its strength by winning its three matches this week with a score of 2-0, surpassing Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna. Spain was also deprived of its main figure, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Subsequently, Cobolli came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he has done on all three occasions this week. Cobolli celebrated the victory with his teammates. Italy won its first Davis Cup title in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
