Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez won the title at the WTA Japan Open, after defeating the young Tereza Valentova in an exciting final.

Fernandez, who faced 18-year-old qualifier Valentova, managed to win with partial scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3, thus securing his fifth individual title in his professional career.

In her eighth final, the 2021 US Open runner-up demonstrated her quality from the start, dominating the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to equalize the score after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

The decisive set saw Fernandez, ranked 27th in the world, break serve in the fourth game, which gave her the necessary advantage to ultimately take the victory.

This triumph represents the second title of the season for Fernandez, who previously was crowned champion at the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
