Jannik Sinner Conquers Wimbledon in an Epic Rematch Against Carlos Alcaraz

The world’s number one tennis player, Jannik Sinner, overcame the defeat suffered against Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros last month and won the Wimbledon title, after an exciting rematch that culminated in a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. This victory represents his first Wimbledon championship and his fourth Grand Slam title.

Barely five weeks after the world’s number one and two players starred in the second-longest Grand Slam final on the clay of Roland Garros, where Alcaraz came back from two sets down and saved three match points, it was Sinner who reacted after losing the first set on the grass.

The 22-year-old Italian, who won the US Open last September and defended his Australian Open title in January, was playing his fourth consecutive Grand Slam final, but his first at the All England Club. In addition, he became the first Italian player to win a singles title at Wimbledon. This match on Centre Court marked the first time the same two men have met in the French Open and Wimbledon finals in the same year since Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did so in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Sinner started leading 4-2, but Alcaraz won four consecutive games to take the first set. In the second set, Sinner broke Alcaraz’s serve in the first game and held his serve for the rest of the set, despite an interruption caused by a fan who opened a bottle of champagne while Sinner was preparing to serve at 2-1. Sinner achieved a decisive break to lead 5-4 and secure the crucial third set, connecting seven aces after failing to achieve any in the first two sets. The 532-day period between Sinner’s victory at the 2024 Australian Open and Wimbledon is the second shortest for any man to win his first four Grand Slam titles, after Federer (434 days from Wimbledon 2003 to the US Open 2004). Alcaraz, who held a 24-match winning streak, had defeated Sinner in five consecutive matches before Sunday’s final and had a 35-3 career record on grass, with a .921 winning percentage, the best for any man in the Open era. Sinner, who won their previous encounter at Wimbledon in 2022, became the first man to defeat Alcaraz twice on grass. Alcaraz’s only other defeats on this surface were against Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon in 2021 and Jack Draper at Queen’s Club 2024. Sinner wore a sleeve with tape to protect his right elbow, something he had been using since he suffered a fall in the first game of his fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov. After eliminating Novak Djokovic, champion of 24 Grand Slam titles, in the semifinals, Sinner stated that he did not believe his elbow was a problem in the final.
