Coco Gauff Shocks with Coaching Change Before the 2025 US Open

American tennis player Coco Gauff, currently number 3 in the world and a two-time Grand Slam champion, has made an unexpected decision just days before the start of the 2025 US Open. Gauff has dispensed with the services of her coach, Matthew Daly. The young star will continue working with Jean-Christophe “J.C.” Faurel, who has been her coach for a considerable time. In addition, she has incorporated Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics specialist, according to sources close to her. During a practice session on Wednesday in New York, Gauff was seen alongside Faurel and MacMillan. MacMillan previously collaborated with Aryna Sabalenka, world number 1, who attributed significant improvements in her serve and forehand to him. Gauff’s decision comes at a time when she has experienced difficulties with her serve, including 42 double faults at the Canadian Open.

I only have good things to say about Coco, I enjoyed working with her.

Matthew Daly
Daly, when contacted, reported that his departure occurred recently and referred to Gauff for an official announcement. Gauff hired Daly, known for his specialization in grip, last year, after separating from Brad Gilbert. Together, they worked on technical and tactical details, including changes in the service grip. Under the tutelage of Daly and Faurel, Gauff won the China Open and the WTA Finals. This season, she conquered the French Open title and reached the finals in Madrid and Rome. The US Open will begin on Sunday in New York. Gauff, the 2023 champion, will participate in an exhibition event on Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
