Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez won the title at the WTA Japan Open, after defeating the young Tereza Valentova in an exciting final.

Fernandez, who faced the 18-year-old qualifier, Valentova, managed to prevail with partial scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3, thus securing her fifth title in her professional career.

In her eighth final, the former US Open runner-up dominated the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to tie the match after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

In the decisive set, Fernandez, currently ranked 27th, secured a crucial break in the fourth game, then resisting the Czech player’s attempts to secure her second title of the season, after winning the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
