Coco Gauff Crowned Wuhan Open Champion After Defeating Jessica Pegula

In a completely American final, Coco Gauff won the Wuhan Open title after defeating Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Gauff demonstrated her dominance on the court, securing her second title of the year and the eleventh of her professional career.

Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before in a title run. I feel very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match, which took place on Sunday, was a display of both players’ skill. Gauff, ranked third, had to fight to save the second set, coming back from 5-3 down. With determination, she held her serve and then broke Pegula’s serve, who was ranked sixth, to tie the score at 5-5. Pegula, after a forehand volley that went wide, conceded Gauff her first match point. Gauff seized the opportunity and, with a powerful forehand after a brief exchange, sealed the victory. Despite the defeat, Pegula had shown a great performance in the tournament, including a victory in the semifinals against Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one. Gauff became the second American to win the Wuhan title, following in the footsteps of Venus Williams, who achieved it in 2015. This was the seventh match between Gauff and Pegula, and the first in a final. Pegula leads the overall head-to-head with a score of 4-3. Both players have won several WTA doubles titles together.

We’ve spent a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her very much. She is very mature for her age.

Gauff improves her record in finals to 11-3, while Pegula is left with a record of 9-11.
