Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open

OSAKA, Japan – Leylah Fernandez won her fifth WTA title by defeating young prospect Tereza Valentova in the final of the Japan Open. The match, played on Sunday, ended with a score of 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.

Fernandez, who was participating in her eighth final, demonstrated her superiority from the start, dominating the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, managing to level the score after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

In the decisive set, Fernandez, currently ranked 27th in the world, secured a crucial break in the fourth game. Afterwards, the Canadian withstood the Czech player’s attacks to secure her second title of the season, following her victory at the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
