Filipino tennis player Alex Eala continues to face difficulties in her career, marked by an unfavorable pattern against Czech players.
In the Miami Open 2026 tournament, Eala was defeated in the round of 16 by Karolína Muchová, seeded number 14, with a score of 6-0 and 6-2, in the early hours of Tuesday (Philippine time).
This defeat represents the second consecutive time in a WTA 1000 tournament that a Czech tennis player eliminates Eala, following the defeat against Linda Nosková in Indian Wells.
Muchová took control from the start, breaking Eala’s serve in the first game and maintaining the advantage throughout the match.
Eala’s resistance was manifested in the second set, where she managed to hold her serve in the fifth and seventh games. These moments showed an improvement in the placement of her first serve and a more aggressive shot selection, although the difference in the score was already considerable.
Muchova’s superiority was evident in the service and return statistics. The 2026 Doha Open champion won 80% of the points with her first serve, compared to Eala’s 39%. In addition, she obtained 64% of the first serve return points, versus Eala’s 20%, demonstrating her dominance in both aspects of the game.
As a result, Eala was unable to repeat her outstanding performance from last year in Miami, where she reached the semifinals. This defeat will cost her 270 points in the ranking and will likely relegate her to the middle of the WTA rankings.
After her participation in the Sunshine Swing, Eala will focus on the clay season, and is expected to begin her tour at the Linz Open 2026 in April.
