Philadelphia Union Wins the 2025 Supporters’ Shield

The Philadelphia Union secured the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supporters’ Shield, with one game still to play, after defeating New York City FC 1-0 on Saturday night at Subaru Park. The Philadelphia team accumulates 66 points in 33 matches, surpassing their competitors, including Inter Miami, champion of the previous year, who will not be able to reach their score in the remaining matches. The Union came into the match knowing that a win would secure them the Shield as the best team in the regular season. Other teams like FC Cincinnati, Vancouver Whitecaps and LAFC were also in contention. Danish forward Mikkel Uhre scored the decisive goal with a deflected shot five minutes before halftime.
Tension resurfaced in the final minutes when Máximo Carrizo appeared to have tied the game for NYCFC, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside. Seconds later, the final whistle unleashed the celebrations. This is the first trophy the team has won under the direction of coach Bradley Carnell, who joined the Union in January for the 2025 MLS season. Carnell has guided Philadelphia to a record of 20 wins, 7 losses, and 6 draws, positioning them as leaders of the Eastern Conference and securing home-field advantage in the playoffs. The victory in the 2025 Supporters’ Shield also guarantees Philadelphia Union a spot in the next edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup, joining MLS teams like Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy, Nashville SC, and Vancouver Whitecaps. The Union had already won the Supporters’ Shield in 2020, after concluding the season with a record of 14 wins, 4 losses, and 5 draws, obtaining the first trophy in the club’s history.
