Lizbeth Ovalle one step away from breaking world record in women’s transfers

Mexican star Lizbeth Ovalle is in advanced negotiations to join an NWSL club, setting a possible world record in women’s soccer. A source close to the situation confirmed the news on Monday night.

According to another source, the Orlando Pride, current league champion, would have finalized the transfer with Tigres Femenil of Liga MX for the talented winger.

The transaction could reach $1.5 million, although other reports suggest the figure could rise to $2 million. If it materializes, Ovalle would surpass the current record, held by Canadian Olivia Smith, who was transferred to Arsenal last month for £1 million (approximately $1.34 million).

This agreement would make Ovalle the first Mexican footballer, in both the men’s and women’s divisions, to hold a world transfer record.

The 25-year-old player, previously linked to Barcelona, could join the NWSL team, currently in third place in the table with a record of 8 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses.

Ovalle has six Liga MX Femenil titles with Tigres, the club she has represented since her professional debut in 2017. In addition, she has won three Campeona de Campeonas trophies.

Internationally, she has participated in more than 50 matches and was included in the Concacaf W Gold Cup’s ideal eleven last year. In the 2024 tournament, where Mexico reached the semi-finals, the winger stood out with a memorable goal against the United States women’s national team, in a historic 2-0 victory.
