Liverpool close to signing Giovanni Leoni

Liverpool is close to finalizing the signing of center-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma, according to sources close to the club. The 18-year-old, who had also sparked the interest of Inter Milan, has been given permission to undergo medical tests with Liverpool and will travel to the UK on Thursday to finalize his transfer for an initial fee of £26 million (35 million dollars).

If the agreement is finalized, Leoni will provide crucial defensive reinforcements to Liverpool following Jarell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen. He will join Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez as center-back options for coach Arne Slot next season, having played 17 Serie A matches with Parma last season.

Earlier this week, Liverpool also initiated talks with Crystal Palace to sign English center-back Marc Guéhi. The South London club is expecting a fee of around £30 million ($41 million) plus £5 million ($7 million) in add-ons, according to sources. A Guéhi has one year left on his contract with Palace and chairman Steve Parish admitted earlier this week that they might be forced to let him go this summer. Liverpool also received a timely defensive boost ahead of the Premier League home opener against Bournemouth with Gomez’s return to training. The 28-year-old player, the current player with the longest tenure at the club, returned home early from the Asia tour with an Achilles tendon injury and was subsequently sidelined for three weeks. But he was photographed with the rest of his teammates on Wednesday as preparations intensify for the defending champions’ season opener at Anfield.
