Manchester City Strengthens its Goalkeeping and Defines the Future of Éderson

Manchester City has finalized crucial deals that are reshaping its structure in the goal. According to sources close to the club, they have reached an agreement to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain and, simultaneously, have given the green light to Éderson’s transfer to Fenerbahce.

City will invest £26 million to secure the services of Donnarumma, who will sign a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium. On the other hand, Éderson will join Fenerbahce in a transfer valued at £12.1 million.

Donnarumma will compete for the starting position with James Trafford, 22, who returned to City from Burnley at the beginning of the summer. Trafford has been the starting goalkeeper in the first three Premier League matches, although he received criticism after the 2-0 defeat against Tottenham.

Éderson’s eight-year stint at the Etihad comes to an end. The Brazilian goalkeeper has been a key player in the team’s successes under Guardiola, including the historic treble-winning season in 2022-23 and the conquest of four consecutive Premier League titles.

Donnarumma was put on the market by PSG after losing prominence under the direction of Luis Enrique.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper contributed to the French team’s Champions League title last season, but was relegated to the bench by new signing Lucas Chevalier this summer.

The City’s first match after the international break will be against Manchester United at the Etihad on September 14th.

Both City and United could feature new goalkeepers in that match, after 23-year-old Senne Lammens joined Ruben Amorim’s team on the last day of the transfer market.
