The Sharks Correcting a Mistake on a Banner
The San Jose Sharks are in the process of correcting an error on a banner recently installed at the SAP Center. This banner celebrated an achievement that the team did not actually obtain.
With the start of the NHL season, the Sharks renovated the banners that adorn their stadium. The new designs feature a smaller team logo and a larger font. In addition, the team’s six division titles were consolidated into a single banner, instead of six individual ones.
However, a new banner generated surprise among online fans and during Sunday’s preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The banner celebrated the Sharks as winners of the Presidents’ Trophy in the 2015-16 season, an award given to the team with the best regular season record in the NHL.The only problem is that the Sharks finished 11th in the league that season, 22 points behind the Washington Capitals, who did win the Presidents’ Trophy in 2015-16.
The Sharks did reach the final in 2015-16, where they lost to the Penguins in six games.
The likely cause of the error is that the Sharks won the Presidents’ Trophy in the 2008-09 season, the only time the team finished in first place overall in the NHL regular season. This achievement did not have a banner in its honor on Sunday night.
The Sharks president, Jonathan Becher, stated on Sunday that it was a “printing error” that the team was already aware of. Becher added that the Sharks “have already requested a replacement banner.”
