Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Race in Ireland

The renowned mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, Conor McGregor, has decided to withdraw from the race for the presidential elections in Ireland. Furthermore, he has described the electoral process as “undemocratic”. At 37 years old, the chances of McGregor appearing on the ballot in October were slim. To achieve this, he needed the backing of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Despite trying to combine his considerable social media influence with the support of key figures, such as Elon Musk, to obtain a nomination, the former UFC champion announced the cessation of these efforts on Sunday.

I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election. You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for their rights and representing the best interests of our nation.

Despite his popularity on social media, McGregor’s position as a political figure in Ireland is questionable. In November, he was found liable in a sexual assault case related to an incident in 2018, in which he was accused of raping a woman in a Dublin hotel. A recent poll by the Sunday Independent in Ireland revealed that only 7% of respondents would have voted for McGregor. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t competed in the UFC since suffering a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He has expressed interest in participating in the UFC event planned at the White House in the United States in the summer of 2026.
