Robert Fleming, Key Figure in the “Miracle on Ice” of 1980, Passes Away

The ice hockey world mourns the loss of Robert Fleming, who passed away on July 31 at the age of 97. Fleming was a key figure in the historic victory of the American team at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, known as the “Miracle on Ice”. Fleming served as chairman of the ice hockey committee for the 1980 Olympic Games. His leadership was crucial to the success of the American team that won the gold medal. In addition, he served as chairman of the ice hockey committee in five Olympic editions and was vice president of USA Hockey from 1970 to 1981. His dedication to the sport extended for 33 years as a director of USA Hockey.
Fleming was recognized for his outstanding contribution to ice hockey. He received the Lester Patrick Award twice: once for his work with the 1980 team and again for his individual service to the sport. In 2004, he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, along with the 1980 team. Before his outstanding managerial work, Fleming had a career as a player. He competed for four seasons for the University of Minnesota and five years for the Rochester Mustangs of the United States Hockey League. Outside the hockey world, Fleming had a successful 43-year career at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He became administrative director of the Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, his four children, 16 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
