Kaepernick and Lynch Push for Diversity in Hockey

Former NFL players Colin Kaepernick and Marshawn Lynch have focused their efforts on promoting diversity and inclusion in the world of hockey.

Both athletes will join members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA) to organize a street hockey tournament for marginalized youth in Toronto on August 16, the alliance announced on Thursday.

The HDA, composed of current and retired NHL players of color, aims to eradicate racism in hockey and make the sport more inclusive and accessible for young people who may not have the resources to play it.

This event, billed as the world’s largest BIPOC youth street hockey tournament, will be free for the 250 young people who will participate.

The tournament expands on the work the HDA has done, offering sports and educational programs on and off the ice throughout the year for 1,500 young players registered in the Toronto area.

Among the members of the HDA are Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Dumba. The alliance is chaired by Akim Aliu, a former minor league player.
