Mike Matheson extends his contract with the Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Mike Matheson for five more seasons through a contract extension worth $30 million. The announcement was made on Friday, prior to the team’s game in Las Vegas. The new agreement will come into effect at the start of next season and will run until the 2030-31 campaign. Matheson, 31 years old, has an 11-season career in the NHL. He is currently in his fourth season with Montreal, where he has recorded four goals and ten assists in 22 games. In addition, he leads the team and ranks in the top 10 of the NHL with an average of 24 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time per game. Matheson was acquired by Montreal in July 2022, in a trade that involved Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling, who were sent to Pittsburgh, along with a fourth-round pick in 2023. With a height of 6 feet 2 inches and a weight of 196 pounds, Matheson achieved his personal best in the 2023-24 season, with 62 points (11 goals and 51 assists). Currently, he plays a more defensive role in Montreal, regularly facing the opponent’s most outstanding offensive lines. Matheson was selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Florida, where he played his first five seasons in the NHL before spending two seasons in Pittsburgh. In his career, he has accumulated 78 goals and 279 points in 649 games.
