Lane Hutson signs multi-million extension with the Canadiens

The talented defenseman Lane Hutson, winner of the Calder Trophy, has reached an agreement to extend his contract with the Montreal Canadiens for eight years and $70.8 million, the team announced this Monday.

Negotiations between the player and the Canadiens intensified over the summer, culminating in an agreement that secures Hutson’s continued presence on the team. The contract, with an average annual value of $8.85 million, includes $55 million in signing bonuses.

Hutson, 21, is coming off a historic season with the Canadiens. The defenseman recorded six goals and 60 assists, setting a new record for assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. In addition, he became Montreal’s first rookie of the year since 1972, when Ken Dryden won the award.

Hutson joins Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch, and Quinn Hughes as the only defensemen to lead rookies in scoring.

The player was selected by the Canadiens in the second round of the 2022 draft and joined the team after two years at Boston University.

This new Hutson contract follows the trend of other agreements signed by young defenders before the start of the season.

Jackson LaCombe from Anaheim signed an eight-year, $72 million contract, while Luke Hughes from New Jersey agreed to a seven-year, $63 million contract.
