Lane Hutson Wins the Calder Trophy
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has been awarded the prestigious Calder Memorial Trophy. This recognition is given annually to the most outstanding player in their first year of participation in the National Hockey League (NHL).
The winner is chosen by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
Hutson received a total of 165 first-place votes out of a possible 191, accumulating 1,832 points, far surpassing Dustin Wolf, goaltender for the Calgary Flames (15 votes, 1,169 points) and Macklin Celebrini, center for the San Jose Sharks (11 votes, 1,104 points).
The trophy was presented to the 21-year-old player during a surprise party organized by his family, celebrating his nomination as a finalist.
Hutson led all rookies with 66 points, and his 60 assists tied the NHL record for a rookie defenseman, shared with Larry Murphy.
Celebrini, 18 years old, participated in 70 games and scored 25 goals, placing second among rookies, only surpassed by Matvei Michkov of the Philadelphia Flyers, and tied with Michkov in points, both with 63.
Wolf, 24, had a 29-16-8 record with a 2.64 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and three shutouts for the Flames, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 draft.
