Kirby Dach, Out with a Foot Fracture, Worsens the Canadiens’ Situation

Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach will be out of action for four to six weeks due to a foot fracture, the team announced on Sunday.

This injury adds to the list of setbacks for the Canadiens, who are seeking their first consecutive playoff qualification since the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

On Friday, the team reported that defenseman Kaiden Guhle will be out for up to 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on his adductor muscle. Alex Newhook, for his part, will miss the next four months due to surgery for a fractured ankle.

These losses come weeks after it was announced that winger Patrik Laine would be out for three to four months following surgery on his core muscle.

Dach, who has five goals and seven points in 15 games, recorded a shot on goal and played 14:43 minutes in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins.

The injury to Dach, who was the third selection in the 2019 draft, represents another obstacle for the 24-year-old player. In the 2023-24 season, he was only able to participate in two games due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. A year earlier, Dach missed 25 games due to another knee injury.

Before Sunday, the Canadiens (10-6-2) were second in the Atlantic Division, just two points behind the Bruins. The team has lost its last three games and has been outscored 15-3, falling in five of its last six games.
