Mike Matheson Extends Contract with the Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Mike Matheson for five more years, through a contract extension valued at $30 million. The announcement was made on Friday, before the team’s game in Las Vegas. The agreement will come into effect at the start of next season and will run until the 2030-31 campaign. Matheson, 31, has an 11-season career in the NHL. He is currently in his fourth season with Montreal, where he has recorded four goals and ten assists in 22 games. In addition, he leads the team and is in the top 10 in the NHL with an average of 24 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time per game. Matheson arrived to the Canadiens along with a fourth-round pick in 2023, in a trade that sent Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to Pittsburgh in July 2022. With a height of 6 feet 2 inches and a weight of 196 pounds, Matheson achieved his personal best with 62 points (11 goals, 51 assists) in the 2023-24 season. Since then, he has taken on a more defensive role in Montreal, regularly facing the opposing team’s most outstanding offensive lines. Matheson was selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Florida, and played his first five seasons in the NHL with the Panthers, before spending two seasons with Pittsburgh. In total, Matheson has accumulated 78 goals and 279 points in 649 games played in his career.
