Jeff Blashill Imposes Intense Pace at Blackhawks Training Camp Start

The Chicago Blackhawks’ training camp kicked off with intensity under the direction of Jeff Blashill, who spared no effort on the first day. Connor Bedard and the rest of the team faced a rigorous practice, where Blashill was present at every moment, giving instructions and advice.

My feet are killing me. I haven’t been on the ice since April, so it was a tough adjustment. I don’t remember them hurting this much, but I guess that’s what happens at every training camp.

This adjustment is minor compared to Blashill’s main task: guiding the team through a rebuilding process after three difficult seasons. The team, led by Bedard, is one of the youngest in the NHL, which presents a challenge for the coach. Blashill has set clear goals for the camp, including building a strong culture, implementing effective game systems, and defining player positions. The intensity and pace of the first practice were notable, with little rest time and a focus on the fundamentals of the game.

I loved everything today. I think it sets the tone for what Blash wants, what our coaching staff wants, and the standard we want to have.

Bedard also highlighted the importance of intensity and hard work to build the team culture. This is Blashill’s second chance to prove his worth as a coach in the NHL. Before joining the Blackhawks, he spent seven seasons at the helm of the Detroit Red Wings. Blashill will rely on his experience in the minor leagues and his time as an assistant in Tampa Bay to guide the young Blackhawks.

There are real comparisons to my experiences in the American Hockey League. But in the end, a coach told me this a long time ago, he was a former player, he said that his best coaches made them do well, and we’re going to make our guys do well.

The Blackhawks’ training camp began without veteran goaltender Laurent Brossoit, who is sidelined with an injury sustained during the offseason. The team has Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom to cover the goaltending position.
