Ekholm Secures His Future with the Oilers After McDavid’s Extension

The Edmonton Oilers continue to fortify their roster after securing Connor McDavid’s contract extension. This time, the team has reached an agreement with defenseman Mattias Ekholm for a three-year extension and $12 million.

This strategic move ensures the permanence of a key player for the team, adding defensive solidity and experience on the ice.

The 35-year-old Ekholm’s contract will come into effect in the 2026-27 season. Currently, the defenseman is in the final year of his contract signed in 2021 with the Nashville Predators, which had an average annual value of $6 million. Ekholm would have become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

In his 15th NHL season, Ekholm recorded 33 points (9 goals, 24 assists) in 65 games with the Oilers last season. His average ice time of 22:11 was the third highest on the team. In addition to being an important penalty-killing specialist, Ekholm also participates in the power play.

Ekholm’s influence goes beyond sports, as his presence and style have inspired a group of Edmonton fans, known as “The Dancing Ekholms”, who attend the games with horned helmets, kilts, and war paint in honor of their “Viking Warrior”.

Ekholm’s signing comes just two days after McDavid agreed to a two-year contract extension.

General Manager Stan Bowman has been actively working to strengthen the team, ensuring the permanence of key players.

The Oilers are coming off their second straight loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. The team has played in the postseason for six consecutive seasons.
