Jeff Blashill Imposes Intense Pace at Blackhawks Training Camp Start

Coach Jeff Blashill didn’t mince words at the start of the Chicago Blackhawks’ training camp. The first practice was demanding, with Blashill constantly giving instructions and advice.

My feet are killing me. I haven’t been on the ice since April, so it was a tough adjustment. I don’t remember them hurting this much, but I guess that happens at every training camp.

This is a minor adjustment for Blashill, who is tasked with leading the team’s rebuild after three difficult seasons. Despite having young talent, led by Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks will be one of the youngest teams in the NHL on opening night.
  • Build a strong culture.
  • Implement effective systems.
  • Define the positions of the players.
The main focus of the first day was culture, centering on the fundamentals of the game. The intensity and pace were notable, with the coaching staff urging the players to maintain the action.

I loved everything today. I think it sets the tone for what Blash wants, what our coaching staff wants, and the standard we want to have.

Nick Foligno
Bedard confirmed that the players were prepared for the demanding training. Blashill seeks to establish a culture of work and performance from the beginning. This is Blashill’s second chance to prove his ability as a head coach in the NHL. Previously, he had a record of 204-261-72 in seven seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Blashill worked as an assistant in Tampa Bay before taking on this new challenge. The coach will rely on his experience to guide the young Blackhawks. Blashill seeks to instill correct habits from the start. The training camp began without veteran goaltender Laurent Brossoit, who is recovering from hip surgery. General Manager Kyle Davidson indicated that Brossoit will be out “long-term.” The Blackhawks have Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom in goal.
