Titans without T’Vondre Sweat for the matchup against the Colts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Titans will be without their starting defensive tackle, T’Vondre Sweat, in their upcoming matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The news comes after the Titans placed Sweat on the reserve/injured list on Saturday.

Sweat suffered an ankle injury during the Titans’ season-opening loss to the Denver Broncos. The 6-foot-4, 366-pound lineman was unavailable for last week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Although he participated in light training and individual drills, the team ruled him out for Week 3 after missing Friday’s practice.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats data, the Titans’ defense allowed 4.3 yards per carry, the tenth-lowest amount among all teams, when they had their two starting interior defensive linemen, Jeffery Simmons and Sweat, on the field last season (309 rushing plays). With one of the two players on the field (96 rushing plays), they allowed 4.7 yards per carry (sixth-highest amount). The average rises to 5.2 yards per carry without Sweat or Simmons on the field (98 rushing plays), which would be the highest figure in the league.

Colts running back Jonathan Taylor ran for 218 yards in his last matchup against the Titans in Week 16. Sweat played 40 plays before suffering an eye injury that forced him to leave the rest of the game.

James Lynch, a veteran defensive tackle, will take on most of the action in Sweat’s absence. The Titans also turned to Carlos Watkins, coming from the practice squad, on Saturday.
