Shedeur Sanders Will Take the Reins of the Browns as Starting Quarterback

The Cleveland Browns have announced that Shedeur Sanders will be the starting quarterback in the next game against the Las Vegas Raiders. This decision comes as Dillon Gabriel remains in the NFL concussion protocol. Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Famer and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, arrives at this position after a steady rise in the Browns’ roster. He will be the 42nd quarterback to start a game for the team since their return to Cleveland in 1999. Sanders, selected in the 2025 draft, debuted in the NFL in the second half of the game against the Baltimore Ravens. In that match, he completed 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards and suffered an interception.

I’m very excited about that, knowing that I have a part of the offense and an opinion on how things fit into my vision and place the players exactly where they need to be.

Sanders’ preparation for this debut has been accelerated, and the team is working to help him. Despite the adversity, Sanders is optimistic and prepared for the challenge. The quarterback has been getting valuable repetitions in practice, preparing for his first start. Coach Kevin Stefanski has emphasized the importance of Sanders feeling comfortable with the offensive concepts. Sanders was considered the top quarterback prospect in the 2025 draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. During the preseason, Sanders had the opportunity to prove his worth, completing 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers. Following Joe Flacco’s departure and Gabriel’s injury, Sanders assumed the backup role. Now, with Gabriel sidelined, Sanders has the opportunity to prove his worth as a starter. The young quarterback is ready to take responsibility and prove his worth on the field.
